How hard is it to develop software with  smartcard?

It's very easy: all that is necessary are only 2 commands (read and write ) for the memory cards and only one more  (insert password) for the protected memory ones ; You can find these commands in the  Starter kit PC/SC ASE-memory. For the CPU cards you must know the operating system and respective commands for the single card that you want to use; an d you find all the information on Starter Kit PC/SC ASE-Crypto

2

How can I chose the type of  smartcard that meets my needs?

For the applications regarding the loyalty of the customer  the protected memory cards are the most used why they are secure and cheap. If you need more memory capacity  (over 1 to 16 Kbytes) and the possible copying is not a problem  the Memory cards are the most widespread. If you need high security the CPU cards  are the best solution :for example the  Payflex for electronic purse, the Multinet to cipher with DES, the SLE66CX  for the digital signature.

Can  I use  ASEDrive II in PC/SC mode?

yes. To let them work in this mode they must be automatically detected  (PnP) by Windows. The firmware must be updated; use the following software :
  • Upd431p.exe updates  the firmware in the ASEDriveII  version 20.007 ( the label in the back of the drive)  (verify with Asemanager/properties) to the version 20.07.04.31p, PnP
  • Upd431.exe restores the firmware to work  in ASE mode
The ASEDriveII 20.0.6 versions must be upgraded to the version  20.007 (UpDOS270.exe) but as they are not PnP they cannot work with  Win 2000
They can work in  PC/SC (not supported) with the drivers PC/SC non PnP
The software and drivers   PC/SC (ASEPCSC10.exe) above can be downloaded by  clicking here
the ASEDriveII  work in PC/SC mode also under Linux and the  SCR 311 also with MAC OS X

5

Can I use memory cards/protected memory cards in PC/SC environment?

Only if the right instructions are supplied by the supplier of the drive: ASEDrive III supplies such instructions; click here.

6

Can I use the second drive of  ASEDrive Pro in PC/SC environment?

yes, it is seen as a further drive.

7

How can I get the unknown or forgotten  password  aof a protected memory card?

There is no way. You can only make attempts : ASECartEdit permits to present the  password and verify its correctness ; it displays the number of attempts still available , once reached the card id locked.

8

Can I use a protected memory card (for instance a  MP42) after reaching the limit of admitted attempts  (3 for  MP42)?

You can only read but not write it.

9

Why does the memory cards often cost more then the protected memory ones?

The cost of the chip of the smartcard suffers from the variations of the scale economics  and today the use of the protected memory cards  ,especially the  MP42, is widespread in the whole world.
